Hurdle and Spar competitions

a completed hurdle - made from split hazel in the tradional way

An integral part of the Hampshire Wood Fayre are the Hurdle and Spar making competitions.

Held on Sunday 12th of July at Butser ancient farm during the second day of the Wood Fayre the aim is to showcase coppice products to a wider ordinance.

There will be cash prizes for both competitions of 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Hurdle making

Each Hurdle will be made from Hazel to the following standard size 6′ x 3′

A period of 1 and a half ours will be allowed to make the hurdle.* 

All entrants must supply there own materials and former.

Spar making

Each spar will be made to the following standard.

minium 27 inches pointed 

Competitors will have 30 minutes to produce as many usable quality spars as possible as judged by a thatcher.

Material to be supplied by competitors.

Competition entry form

*A set period will be allowed prior to the hurdle making competition.

Materials must be delivered to site by 09:00 on the day of the competition.
